Curve - Nearly Home Trees

This is a freestanding curve. It is handmade in my studio in Cornwall and is inspired by the fabulous coast surrounding my county. This is a 2-3 day process, layers of thin coloured glass, crushed glass and powdered glass are used to create an intricate design. Each piece is created using layers of thin coloured bullseye glass with crushed and powdered glass to create detail and texture. It is then heated in a kiln for 13 hours to fuse the crushed glass together, after cooling and cold working it is returned to the kiln where it is slumped over a mould for another 13 hours to create the distinctive curves.

The texture creates a large surface area to allow reflection and sparkle of the natural light. The transparent glass allows light to pass through and the slim footprint allows the glass to be displayed on a narrow shelf as well as windowsills. Candles can be lit behind the glass to create a lovely ambience.

This image is inspired by the iconic "Nearly Home trees" on the Devon / Cornwall border at Lifton, also known as Cookworthy Knapp. Many weary travellers love this heartwarming image when arriving back in Cornwall.  Little sheep graze at the bottom of the hill. Iridised spring green glass is complimented with Aventurine Green and jade green and texture is incorporated to increase light reflections.

It is approx. 7cm tall and approx 16 cm wide. The curve is signed.

Each piece of my glass is created without templates or machinery so no two pieces are identical, therefore pieces may differ slightly from photographs.
